One of the main reasons a person would look at starting their
own medical transcription business is to be able to work at home
and set their own schedule. Starting a medical transcription
business is easy and inexpensive compared to many other home

college in around 9 months you can get the education you need to
get your business started..  You will not to get a degree in
medical transcription to start your business. 

Some basic things you will need include a printer, a
transcriber, reference books, a computer, and a few other
general office e products like pens, papers a filing system etc.

equipment if necessary.

Once you get the needed education there are a few other skills
you personally need. These include basic computer skills, word
processing, grammar skills, listening skills, being able to do
research, typing proficiency, self motivated, the ability to
meet deadlines, basic bookkeeping skills, and being goal
oriented. Your business will grow as fast as you direct it to. 
You will also need some computer programs such as a medical
spell checker and a word expander utility to cut down on the
amount of actual typing you do.  Some programs, such as
Microsoft WordŽ include this type of utility.   

Medical transcription is usually paid by the amount of work
transcribed.  It is normal to charge your clients by the line. 
If you charge 14 cents per line and type 250 lines per hour your
hourly rate would end up being about  $35.00.  

As a self employed person you are responsible for your own
health insurance, retirement plan and self employment taxes. You
will need an area in your home to call an office. There are tax
benefits for running your own home business as a medical
transcriber that you will want to consult with a tax adviser on. 

Of course the single biggest benefit of working for yourself is
you decide when you work and when you don't. Controlling your
own schedule is a great feeling when you handle it right. You
can make as much money as you want once you get your medical
transcription business started.
