"How To Manage Your Time"
Written By Jeff Schuman
Have you been trying to figure out how to manage your time? Do
you have too many phone calls, emails, or unannounced visits
everyday?
What if those annoying interruptions are actually an opportunity
knocking? It may be possible in your quest on how to manage your
time more efficiently that you could turn interruptions into profit!
Changing your perspective about interruptions can reduce the
annoyance factor and any resulting pressure. It may also help you
put the interruptions to a good purpose. If you take the time to
answer that call or visit briefly with a colleague you may be
building relationships that will serve you better in the future.
That is not to say that you need to spend large amounts of time
in conversation, but a few minutes is well spent. After a few
minutes, it is respectable to say something like ‘I’d love to
talk more about this with you? When are you available?’ If you
really can’t afford to be interrupted, close your office door –
it’s much more difficult to stop by.
You could let your voice mail take messages until you are more
able to respond. Caller i.d has been a big help for time
management. Not every call has to be answered at that exact
moment.
When it comes to emails, instead of answering them as they come
in it’s better to set aside some time each day to respond. That
way you’re in control and can focus on your work. Email is the
biggest waste of time for most internet marketers because in
spite of spam filters so many unwanted emails still get through.
Why would you want to take the time for ‘interruptions’?
Relationship building is an important part of building any
business. Sometimes it is not what you know, but who you know.
This can only be done by getting to know the people you work
with as well as the people you want to work with.
Responding in a timely fashion or even taking a call or email at
that exact moment can make a good first impression for you. If
you are promoting a product or program you will increase your
success rate by showing an interest in your products. This is
better done right away or as soon as possible as opposed to
returning a call or email at a later date when they are not as
enthused about your offer.
As you consider how to manage your time you are going to want to
prioritize your day. The most important 'to do' items go at the
top and you work your way down the list. Of course you need to
make a list. This is a basic time management technique that
surprisingly is not always done.
Successful people write things down and scratch them off their
list as they do them. You will find how you manage your time
improves and interruptions become less annoying when you are
achieving your action items on a daily basis.
