Long Tail Keyword Phrases

I was just looking at my statistics from Google analytics and was checking out the keywords category.

One thing that struck me was the number of long tail keyword phrases that I’m being found on every month.

If you are not familiar with the term long tail keyword phrases it is just the multi-number of words that you are found on through the search engines.

For example make money now is one of the most popular phrases my website is found from.

This is a longtail version of the shorter phrase make money, which is much harder to be found for. What was interesting to me was the number of keywords I am found from and how much longer the phrases are becoming.

In the last 30 days my Team-Schuman web pages ware found via Google for over 4000 keyword phrases. Many of these only brought me one visitor per month. However, another thing that was interesting was the amount of time that that these one visitor phrases spent on my site once they got there.

It was not unusual to see them spend 1:00 minute or much longer! This certainly gives me a great chance to get a positive response from their visit. That can be everything from filling out a lead form, clicking on a ppc ad, buying something, or subscribing to JV With Jeff.

Some of these are very targeted long tail phrases because they are searching for very targeted words. For example, here is a long tail keyword phrase that my website was searched from on Google….

how to make money fast on the internet

For the fun of it I went to Google and typed this phrase in and there I was on page 1. I repeated this process several times for various words showing up on the Google analytics reports and there I was on page 1 every time.

So think about how exciting that is from a traffic standpoint. I know that I’m currently receiving 2500 to 3500 visitors a day to my Team-Schuman.com website. This includes visitors to all of my pages including my blog.

Two years ago the majority of my traffic came from three keyword phrases. I was on page 1 above the fold for make money, make money online, and make money at home. I was finding it harder to stay on page 1 of Google above the fold for these three phrases.

So I made a conscious decision to begin targeting long tail keyword phrases in various ways, because I wanted to spread my traffic out. I felt if I could begin getting traffic for more keyword phrases I could develop some consistency on a monthly basis and how my website was being found.

This has proven to be true and something that I would suggest all of you do, because this traffic is so targeted and very good quality traffic as well. And it continues to come in on a monthly basis without having to spend the time working on staying on page one of Google for these long tail keyword phrases. Now I can target even more of them which brings me more quality traffic!

If you are not sure what keywords to you want to target for the niche of your own website I suggest getting Keyword Easy and using it to develop a very liong list of words that you want to be found for. It is well worth the little bit of money it costs, and it will make you many times that amount in the future. You can learn more here……

    Hey Jeff,

Thanks for this information…..but aren’t there free keyword tools out there just as good as this one? Please recommend something that I do not have to pay for if you can. Thanks

Yep, the days of simply relying on ‘Make Money’ etc keywords are clearly gone, most people are developing keyword lists using much the same tools.

Too much competition on the same words.

What you’ve done is use the best tool around, your brain, and it’s paying off handsomely.

    Great stuff!

I have embarked on a project to update my web site with non competitive key words- including what you have suggested. My website was analyzed and it was nowhere near the top pages of most search engines. So it is wise for any newbie network marketer to invest in SEO strategies in order to be like Jeff

Thank you Jeff for leading the way!

A very good article as the long tail key words are Google ad words cheaper and can be included in your articles for those smaller niches searches.

I use a different software I have owned for a year, but yours is an equal when it comes to that needed and more detailed search for keywords people are looking for.

You can really find some interesting things and get in the minds of buyers specifics..

Good point. It really is irrelevant how you build your keyword list. You just need to get one going and start attacking it. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the article Jeff - very interesting indeed. I was #1 on Google for about 2 and a half years on a really competitive keyword phrase and knew I’d never be able to maintain it. But I didn’t bother going into long keyword phrases as I preferred to move to Joint Venturing and tapping into the skills of the “new set” coming in in the last couple of years. Still a tough way to do things, but the residual incomes I set up back in 2001 are still going which is fantastic.

Sounds good to me Paul. I like residual income too!

    Great points Jeff.

And I whole-heartedly agree with you on the long-tail keywords being targeted and prosperous. The majority of traffic on my websites come from long tails.

The ironic thing about the long tails though is Google seems to keep the door slightly ajar at the onset of your site “introductory period.” Too bad it doesn’t always last though…

That being said, it would be great to harness the long tails for a long term strategy!

    Great information Jeff

I’m constantly learning about long tail keywords but still find it difficult to interpret the results to obtain low competitive long tong keywords.

    Thanks Jeff,
This verified my suspicions as I have been targeting stay at home mom’s business opportunities and a few others and have found by looking at search terms from which people have found my site and blog ( more so my Word Press blog than my site ) that I have gotten listed fairly well for variations of some of those long tailed keyword phrases including a few that I was shocked that anyone would search on. I have found some really strange combinations of words that people are searching on. This is sort of funny in a way. Around a month ago I submitted an article “Stay at Home Moms Beware” and many variations thereof and also posted it on my blog. Someone found it on my blog with keywords “mom’s beware .com” and my post was number two on Google second to a porn site..LOL..Of course I didn’t know it was a porn site till I clicked on it ..It was NASTY…lol…

You are welcome Tyrone. To me a longtail keyword phrase is one with 3 or more words. People are typing in longer phrases when searching for things online. I was recently found for an 11 word keyword phrase that I ranked on Google for.
