I have always thought that search engine optimization was a term that many people try to make more difficult than it really was.

There are people who have made a living out of offering SEO services to help a person improve their website or blog.

With over 50% of all traffic coming from search engines on a daily basis, it is certainly is worth spending some of your time trying to rank high for targeted keywords. This I think is one of the keys because knowing what keywords people are searching for is the first step in being able to target them.

I read an interview recently from Jill Whalen who is considered to be one of the leading experts on search engine optimization. I will give you the link to that in just a minute where you can read the whole interview.

Here are a couple of highlights and I found revealing.

1. She feels that the key to ranking high for search engines is to give them what they want. I would agree with that 100% because as far back as four years ago I began writing website articles and building my webpages with the search engines in mind.

Search engines have a tough job. If you lay out your page, and provide content on that page that a search engine would find useful to their searchers, it only makes sense that it you will begin to rank high for the keywords that your content is written around.

2. Another thing she said was that starting a blog can be helpful, but only if you keep up with it on a consistent basis. I know for a fact that search engines love blogs, but only if you get them coming to spider your site on a consistent basis.

You do this by consistently posting quality content, and by social bookmarking that content to top social directories. From a search engine bait standpoint these directories get spidered every day, and having links pointing back to your blog begins to get your site spidered consistently too.

3. One other thing that she said that has been the backbone of what I do with my Team-Schuman website and that is work on getting back links and approach it from a long term strategy.

Getting a back link one link at a time is not a very exciting way to build an Internet business.

However, if you consistently work at getting quality links and you do this over a period of years, it can really make a difference in the amount of quality free traffic that continues to give you.
