Alot of great points here. I haven't ventured into Derek's forum yet but I can vouch for the effectiveness of forums. I regularly contribute to forums and as I check my analytics (literally minutes ago) I see just over 100 unique visits coming from just two of the forums I participate in.

Not only are they great places to get valuable information, but if you unselfishly contribute and your resource box isn't too cluttered, you can get loads of free traffic from them.
